  • I DO NOT MIND MY OWN BUSINESS

Mind my own business is the code of life in the world around me.

a child is being beaten and abused

    Mind my own business. No!!

An elderly person is being beaten and robbed on a street corner.

    Mind my own business. No!!

My neighbor is ill and can not take care of her or himself.

A family is living in a car or in a door way in a boarded up building on the street.

An animalis being starved and beaten.

    Mind my own business.

    Hell no!!

  • stephensmustang

Totally with you on this one.

  • Erika_Steele

I agree.  I think people mind their own business at the wrong times.

Sad that when people really need help and ask, other people find some other subject to talk about instead off helping. I feel the same.

    You are a good neighbor.

We need more people willing to do this!

    Dear Ruth,

I applaud your drive. We could use a person like you on the Emergency Response Team at the mobile park where I live.

Allow me to become the devil's advocate and posit a scenario where possibly minding one's own business would have saved two lives. I read about this in the L.A. Times at lunch and it devastated me.

There was a big wreck involving an SUV crashing into a power pole followed by a fire hydrant. A woman who witnessed the wreck was told by her husband not to get out of their car. She ignored him and while he was dialing 911 on his cell, opened the car door and started toward the wreck on foot to see if she could help.

A rapidly filling  pool of water from the broken hydrant was electrified by the fallen power pole. While her husband watched from inside their car, the woman was immediately electrocuted when her foot hit the pool of water. To make matters worse, another woman tried to rescue her and was killed immediately when she touched the first woman.

Another example involved me. I used to ride a motorcycle. Going through an intersection in the rain which already had two crashed cars in it, the guy in front of me on the right as we went through the intersection decided willy nilly to hang a uturn to go back and see if he could help anyone in the crash. Since we were accellerating out of the intersection, and there were cars on either side of me, the only place for me to go was right into his left rear quarter as he made his sudden turn. No time to think really. My bike stopped but I didn't and I was catapulted over the trunk of his car.

If I hadn't had a full face helmet and my yellow slicker, which sort of allowed me to " slip and slide" down the asphalt, I probably wouldn't be writing this, and all because someone wanted to be a good samaritain.

So as in all things, even being a nice guy or gal can have unwanted and horrific circumstances.

@baldmike2004 - Ty so much for your comment Michael and very true that in some cases minding ones own business and simply calling 911 is the best action to take.

    Your input is much appreciated.

I have stated what I feel is all of our businesses in this post-child abuse-animal abuse-holding out a hand of help to the homeless families we all see every day-an elderly neighbor who is ill and alone and who needs help.  There are many acts of humanity we can all step up and help with that are our business.

None of us have to go out and join an emergency response team.  I am way to old for that, but I can alert the authorities when a child is being abused and not turn my back and say it is none of my business, and that is just one example.

Nice to have you on the side who can't always fend for themselves.

@baldmike2004 - I think the lesson there is "don't be an idiot" rather than "don't be helpful".

I'm a strong believer in minding my own business, but these kinds of things are all our business! No doubt that many will applaud you with a few strokes on a keyboard. Let's hope they'll take it a step farther and act on your noble words as well. None of us has to look very far to find instances of one or the other of the things you've described here, not far at all. Peace to you, thanks for the great entry.

  • nepenthium

lol there is a difference between being aware of the world around you and being plain nosy

  • Grannys_Place

@nepenthium - true but when a child is being abused it is every ones business to stop it

There are folks who would rather spend time being on the computer than being in the real world. The real world takes a while to get used to and discover the limits of the things that one can do.

Some folks get tired of the real world, after all there is an element of danger where a nosy person can get silenced.
I see people feeding the birds, sometimes it gets out of control and there are too many birds dependant upon a bird feeder. I can't offer a solution for the problem of too many birds.
I would hope the pro life folks offer more solace to those too poor to have children.
I would hope people report child abuse and domestic violence. Even the police hate to answer the call to domestic violence.
I do small things every day, I pick up trash that is not mine. I help those who do not have enough bus fare and offer friendly advice here on the internet.
I thank G-d to know my limits to help folks and pray that I do not miss my chance to help those in which I am able to help. Amen

These things are our business.  No one is neutral.  If we do not fight for each other, we are aiding the evil.

TRue empathy is very rare these days..."there but for the grace of God,go I"  I greatly admire that in a person.everything is our business.
