  • FFFFFFFFFRUSTRATEDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My old cameras died, both of them on the same day and I have been researching new ones, which were way beyond my financial means.

My youngest son and his partner, were here the day after my cameras died and he showed me a few cameras online he thought I needed.

I have only used Sony Cyber Shots, which my son says is nothing more than a glorified point and shoot with expensive batteries.

    Hey I liked them.

He told me to not buy a camera til he and his partner got back up here from Oregon for my birthday.  I agreed and was pretty frustrated at what I saw online anyway.

Today I recieved a new Canon SLR EOS Rebel T3 EOS 600 with 4 different lenses.  Holy moly.  It is a birthday gift from the guys and thank god there is an instruction book.

Holy crap it is confusing and frustrating.

The guys told me it is time for me to learn to use a good camera.

I just found tutroials on you tube too so I am going to be busy learning how to use this thing, and the lenses.

Yes I am grateful and yes, I thanked them and meant it, but holy shit this is confusing.

that is a very cool birthday gift.  but i understand your frustration with new technology.

  • lanney

New tech is always challenging.  I usually end up just ignoring half the buttons.  I hope it soon gets easy enough to be fun!

  • slmret

Step 1.  Set the dial at P (fully automatic), shoot a few shots, load them to the computer and see how nice they are.

Step 2.  Set the dial at AV (aperture priority), shoot several shots of the same thing, changing the aperture setting (see the manual), load them and see the differences between them.

When you're expert, set the dial at TV (exposure priority, timing) or M, and play with it -- these are harder, and I seldom use them!

What a neat b'day gift, Ruth -- and Canon is a great camera!  Have fun with it!

What a nice gift! Hope you figure it out. I would just take a million pictures, see how they come out, take more pictures, change settings, take more pics, etc. Have fun and can't wait to see all the photos. :)

What a fantastic gift, Ruth! It won't be long and you'll have it all figured out and be sharing glorious shots with us.

I so enjoy my point and shoot nikon. I don't want or need anything fancy cuz I use my camera strictly for fun. If and when I get lucky, I enlarge and hang on a wall in my house. I don't have the time or the energy to use a camera for professional purposes... That, and I don't have the time or patience to learn all the fancy stuff that comes with a fancy camera. But i sure do wish you luck in figuring out your new toy. You take such great photos Ruth. I look forward to what you will learn and show us. Soon I hope....

  • SisterMae

My camera is a simple point and shoot I would be frustrated with the fancy ones

  • songoftheheart

Very nice of them.  You can do it, Ruth!

the movie "captain ron" *kurt russel, martin short* has a pg scene wherein captain ron *kurt russel borrow mr Harvey's *martin short video camera and is filming mr harvey's wife from the bottom prominent angle and the confrontation of mr harvey is to begin a diatribe of he has read the 64 page manual  all of it and captain ron has not - he should play with expensive things as toys. ;)

I too, have read the shorter manual for my old sony and I had a ball learning how the early model of point and shoot technology * it is a radar object distance  focusing  levels thing and it is how more snaps come out  yay worthy... and

the point is, have yourself a ball, you don't have to as much fuss with settings... however, it is fun if you do  :D

That's a nice gift. My husband likes to buy nice cameras, but, like some others who have commented, I usually ignore most of the functions and just use it like a point and shoot. Sometimes, I get adventurous and move some dials, but I'm afraid I'll screw it up! Good luck.

Don't let it throw you. That new camera is going to be your new favorite toy of all time! Baby steps. Janet knows what she's talking about and when I get a real camera I know several xangans that will give me tips if I ask! So ask and someone will give you a hand. (but not me - I'm camera illiterate)

Can Granny learn some new tricks?  I hope you learn to enjoy your new camera!

  • fauquet

You got a hyper camera , Ruth .Your old ones already gave excellent photos but this  new one will make wonders .It is a beautiful birthday gift ..
    You have the luck to get an instruction book . This is precious . For me it was on a CD and it is not practical . I am not sure I use correctly my camera.;

I agree with you--I love my point and shoot--I got a new camera last year with all the bells and whistles--never did figure it out--its sitting in the box !! Good luck--hope you can figure it out

  • feyenigma

Most times, it doesn't matter what kind of camera you have---sure, a nicer one tends to help, but if you don't have an eye for beauty, you aren't going to capture anything worthwhile other than perhaps a clean and clear image. You have that eye and I always adore your shots.

I've had my eye on that camera for a while. Every time we go to the store I meander over to the electronics center and play with it, hoping to learn it before purchasing, haha. I hope you can adjust to the new and wondrous piece of technology with very little hiccups and that once you find your nitch with it, you come to truly love it like you did your others.

  • RakkaRay

No need to put your great new camera in the box for good - just figure out the "auto" setting and use it like a point and shoot.  Later you can learn some of the other features if you want to - but no obligation,

  • RighteousBruin

Happy Birthday, Ruth.  You will do fine with the camera.  Just learn one skill at a time. Practice is everything with these tools.

  • Growedup

~*Smiles*~... I know exactly what it feels like to love what you alrady have, it dies, than having to realte to much less figure out how to use a new one!!! When my videocamera died, Sony that used those little 8mm tapes that look like mini VHS tapes... I have a digital one with a touch screen which frustrates me when I'm trying to figure out what button to push, and I realize... TOUCH SCREEN and I feel like an idiot

  • HUMOR_ME_NOW
My son is a technical genius and always wants me to buy smart phones, I-Pads, etc.  I like my Toshiba Notebook and dumb phone. Works for me. lol

I am sure you will figure it out and love it. I am not as adventurous as you, Ruth.

    hugs

they say learning new things keeps our minds sharp, you'll be sharp as a tac in no time Ruth!

  • Roadkill_Spatula

It's a wonderful camera, from what I've read, but there's a big difference between a fancy SLR and a point-and-shoot. Once you find the basic setting that you can use for most shots, you'll be all right.

Shooting RAW is much, much slower than shooting jpegs, and uses a lot more memory, so image resolution is one thing you might want to adjust. A high-res jpeg should be fine for most purposes.

  • atticusfin

It's a great camera......it's what I use and I am pretty much technology challenged.  I agree with simret.....set on the auto setting and you are good to go.  If you want to do more......you can but don't have to.

  • Kellsbella

Oh, dear. I'm afraid I can't give you a lick of help. Seems as though slmret knows what she's talkin about....

I always dig your pics. You'll figure it out.
