At North Bend state park, near me here in WV, they had apples cling on late like that, and it seems they fermented a bit, because there were several news report of drunken deer staggering in the parklands. Several channels carried the clip of one deer staggering into a parked car and simply falling down. It was hilarious.

A feast for the birds and squirrels - and even the deer. hehe! I saw some reports of drunken deer but not in my area. We are just worried about the EHD (epizootic hemorrhagic disease)...

@murisopsis - I have heard the same thing here and I read in another comment that the apples rot and ferment, and the deer get drunk on them.
